  • Section: 406.3.2.1
  • Topic: Garage Dwelling Separation Required for Residential?

  • Question: Is private garage dwelling unit separation required in a residential home per FBC 406.3.2.1 as it was removed from the Residential FBC, but is still included in the FBC?

Answer on 06/27/2022 at 7:39 AM

This is not required unless it is a single-family dwelling greater than three stories required to comply with the FBC-Building.

Commentary:

FBC 101.2 exception 1 requires detached one-and-two family dwellings to comply with FBC-R. The door closures are not required per section 508, if designed under the FBC - Residential volume.
