Original Request

  • Date: August 20, 2018
  • Requested By: Jesse J. Baez
  • Requester E-Mail: jbaez@jeminspections.com
  • Code Version: 2017
  • Code: EXTBLDG
  • Code Description:
  • Chapter:
  • Section: 706.1
  • Topic: Minimun deck slope requirements for reroofing within the HVHZ

  • Question: Is it the intent of the exception found in Section 706.1 of FBC Existing (6th Edition) pertaining to Reroofing in the HVHZ to require the minimum deck slope of 1/4" per foot as prescribed in 1515.2.2.1 even though the latter Code section only makes reference to new construction?

Answer on 08/20/2018 at 7:38 AM

No. The minimum slope requirement contained in Section 1515.2.2.1 is only applicable for new construction. Reroofing does not constitute new construction. Instead, it is an Alteration Level 1 which is by definition a construction or renovation of an existing building.

Commentary:

Note: Section 1507 is reflected in the same exception for non-HVHZ areas. It appears the correct reference for non-HVHZ construction should more accurately be Section 1511.1.
