  • Code Description: Building
  • Chapter: 9
  • Section: 905.4
  • Topic: Horizontal Exit

  • Question: 1. Is it the intent that in the Exception to sub-paragraph 2 that the term floor areas adjacent to a horizontal exit refer to the areas on the side of the horizontal exit where all spaces can be reached with a 100 hose and 30 hose stream from an exit stairway hose connection. 2. Is it the intent that the Exception apply if all spaces in a floor area can be reached by a hose connection adjacent to the other side of the of a horizontal exit? 3. Is it the intent that the distance between the exit stairway hose connection and the stairway door be subtracted from the 100 of hose allowed in the Exception?

Answer on 05/24/2013 at 12:13 PM

[1] No. The provision applies solely to floor areas adjacent
to the horizontal exit. I don't really understand what the
term "all" in the question means. Adjacent is defined as
"lying near, close, or contiguous; adjoining; neighboring". A
space on the same floor as the horizontal exit may not be
adjacent to the horizontal exit. [2] No. See answer to one. We
are not talking about all areas on the floor, but floor areas
adjacent to the horizontal exit. [3] No. You have 100 feet of
hose from the connection and the 30 feet allowed for the hose
stream to contend with. Item 1 of the Section requires the
hose connection to be located at an intermediate floor level
landing between floors.

Commentary:

NOTE: additional hose connections may be required under the provisions of sub paragraph 6 of the Section.
