  • Code Version: 2007
  • Code: EXTBLDG
  • Code Description: Existing Building
  • Chapter: 9
  • Section: 901.2
  • Topic: Change of Occupancy

  • Question: Is it the intent of a, "Change in occupancy with no change of occupancy classification" apply to a change in use of an occupancy within the same occupancy classification group?

Answer on 04/19/2011 at 10:34 AM

Yes, if the work area method is elected. Section 101.5 of
the FBC-EB requires one of three compliance methods be
elected. Under the work area method, this change of
occupancy without change in occupancy classification would
require compliance
with FBC-EB section 908.1, which lists in item #8, health
care facilities as one of the special occupancies which
would require the electrical system to be brought into
compliance with the NEC requirements for the new use.

Commentary:

The prescriptive or performance compliance method may offer an alternative path of compliance.
