Original Request

  • Code Version: 2021
  • Code: BUILDING
  • Code Description:
  • Chapter:
  • Section: 716
  • Topic: Smoke and draft control requirements for fire-resistance-rated doors at elevator openings in fire-resistance rated corridors.

  • Question: I have three questions:
    1. Do the smoke and draft control requirements for fire-resistance-rated doors outlined in Section 716.5.3.1 apply to elevator openings into fire-resistance-rated corridors in order to satisfy corridor continuity requirements of 1020.6?

    2. Is it correct that provisions in Section 3006 that waive requirements for an elevator lobby do not waive the corridor opening protection requirements of 716.5.3.1?

    3. If requirements that waive the need for an elevator lobby under 3006 do not waive corridor opening protection requirements of 716.5.3.1, are the following options the only ways to achieve the protection required by Section 716.5.3.1:
    a. An elevator lobby with fire-resistance-rated partitions and fire-resistance-rated doors meeting the requirements of 716.5.3.1.
    b. Additional swing doors that meet the requirements of 716.5.3.1 installed directly over the hoistway opening.
    c. An elevator door meeting fire-resistance-rating requirements combined with an elevator smoke curtain tested per UL 1784 and meeting the requirements of 716.5.3.1.
    d. Elevator hoistway pressurization per Section 909.21.
