  • Question: 8.3.2.4 Each new Fire wall, Fire Barrier, etc. req'd to have protected openings must have signs or stenciling above a ceiling and in concealed spaces. We are one of the architects for Planet Fitness - (A) Assembly occupancy, most times with less than 300 calculated occupants. Since most of our remodels & building takeovers are in strip malls, they almost always have the demising walls in place which extend to roof deck, and most have existing fire caulk, fire sealant, etc. from the previous tenant's time in that space. We have recently run into Fire Marshals who have requested us to re-caulk, re-seal, etc., when this work is already existing construction. A couple of Fire Marshals have also mandated that we add stenciling above ceilings and on the existing demising walls. We do have suspended ACT ceilings in portions of these gyms, but the majority of the gym is open to roof structure. There are no concealed spaces. Are we required to add this stenciling, since these demising walls, including the 1-Hr. rated construction, are existing, and we have no concealed spaces?
