  • Topic: Required fire rating of exterior structure only supporting facade finish

  • Question: In a construction type I-A building, would an external structure outside of the building envelope (not supporting roof or floor), and only supporting a perforated metal exterior facade finish, be required to be fire rated like the exterior bearing walls per table 601 in the FBC? Both the structure and facade finish would be of non-combustible materials. Thank you.

Answer:

The described assembly applied on the exterior side of exterior wall appears to meet the definition of EXTERIOR WALL COVERING. This is not required to meet the provisions of Sections 705 and 601.

EXTERIOR WALL COVERING. A material or assembly of materials applied on the exterior side of exterior walls for the purpose of providing a weather-resisting barrier, insulation or for aesthetics, including but not limited to, veneers, siding, exterior insulation and finish systems, architectural trim and embellishments such as cornices, soffits, fascias, gutters and leaders.
