  • Code Version: 2021
  • Code: BUILDING
  • Code Description:
  • Chapter:
  • Section: 1008.2.1
  • Topic: Lighting levels under normal power

  • Question: Section 1008.2.1 indicates that an illumination level of not less than 1 footcandle is required under normal power at all walking surfaces. Would this illumination requirement apply to vehicle circulation ramps within an open parking garage that are used only for vehicle circulation between levels of the garage, are signed to prohibit walking on them and do not include any provisions for pedestrians?”

Answer:

If the vehicle ramp is not part of the "means of egress" then Section 1008.2.1 is not applicable and the answer is no.

Commentary:

Vehicle ramps shall not be considered as required exits unless pedestrian facilities are provided.
