Original Request

  • Date: July 05, 2023
  • Requested By: John Farinelli
  • Requester E-Mail: john@jccode.com
  • Code Version: 2021
  • Code: BUILDING
  • Code Description:
  • Chapter:
  • Section: 310.6
  • Topic: Residential Group R-4

  • Question: Is it the intent of Section 310.6 that allows an R-4 occupancy to be constructed under the FBC, Residential Code to exclude the provisions of FBC, Building Section 420 applicable to an R-4 Occupancy?

Answer on 07/05/2023 at 12:01 PM

If the R-4 building is equipped with an automatic fire sprinkler system per section 903.2.8 then it can go entirely to the Florida Building Code, Residential. You would not divert back to references made in the Florida Building Code, Building unless the Residential code tells you to.

Commentary:

The Key is the word OR, you can build meeting the requirements of the FBC including section 420 OR you can build to the residential code if you include fire sprinklers per section 903.2.8.
