  • Code Version: 2021
  • Code: PLUMBING
  • Code Description:
  • Chapter:
  • Section: 802.1.2
  • Topic: Drains within Food Coolers and Freezers

  • Question: Is it the intent of 802.1.2 to prevent floor drains and trench drains within coolers unless the cooler has a raised/ elevated floor to allow the waste piping to be discharged into an indirect waste receptor via air gap?

Answer on 02/15/2023 at 8:55 AM

While the plumbing code does not specifically require floor drains within walk-in coolers and freezers, 802.1.2 outlines the requirements for doing so. It is important that the food stored be protected from possible contamination, and that the piping be protected against freezing. The code provides multiple methods. If the floor is raised sufficiently, the floor drain may be piped to an indirect waste receptor located outside of the cooler by means of an air gap. Recognizing that some coolers are set at floor level, the code also provides an exception, which permits connection by means of an air break, provided that the floor drain is also protected by a backwater valve.
