  • Code: BUILDING
  • Code Description:
  • Chapter: Chapter 6-Types of Construction
  • Section: 603
  • Topic: Mechanical Equipment in non-combustible attics

  • Question: Is mechanical equipment (such as a fan coil unit) allowed in attics of Type I and II construction so long as it meets the requirements of 718.5? This is assuming the attic is designed as a 1-hour roof/ceiling assembly.

Answer on 11/20/2019 at 1:14 PM

No. Clarifying - Wrong code book.
If this is a commercial building, Section C403.2.9.6 in the FBC-EC does not allow air handling units in attics of commercial buildings.
Section 603.1.1 has allowances for nonmetallic ducts installed per the FBC-Mech.
