  • Chapter: 27
  • Section: P2709.1
  • Topic: Finished Floor Slope Requirements Tile Shower

  • Question: Per P2709.1 the slope requirement of 2-4% of a finished floor is required only for "shower receptors" which are prefabricated and installed to be a finished product, with no pre-sloped shower pan installed beneath. Please confirm this is not a requirement of a residential "tile" shower in which a shower pan, pre-sloped at 2% and inspected by AHJ, has already been installed.

Section P2709 Shower receptors contains the requirements for field fabricated shower receptors. The requirement for slope on the lining (where required) and slope on the finished floor covers all field fabricated shower receptors.

Commentary:

The finished floor must be sloped uniformly to the drain using between 2 percent and 4 percent slope. If the shower is provided with a lining, the lining must also slope a minimum of 2 percent. Prefabricated showers are governed by ANSI Z124.2/CSA B45.5, which dictates a slope of between 1 percent and 4 percent. P2709.1 pertains to all shower receptors including "Tile" .
