  • Section: 3004
  • Topic: Elevator hoistway venting requirements

  • Question: Is the intent of the 6th edition of the FBC to eliminate the Hoistway Venting requirements outlined in section 3004 of the 5th edition of the FBC?

Answer on 04/10/2018 at 1:59 PM

Yes. The Significant Changes to the Florida Building Code explains the removal of Section 3004 Hoistway Venting from the FBC 2017 Edition. The reasons given are: there appears to be no definite reason for venting the hoistway and the requirement for hoistway venting was removed from the 2010 edition of ASME A17.1 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators. Also cited is an energy concern associated with the ventilation causing loss of conditioned air and the intrusion of unconditioned air into the building.
