Question
Is it the intent of Section 306.3.2 to require relocation of an air handler to within six(6) feet of an attic access when changing out an existing system?

Commentary
Replacing just the existing split system equipment is
typically a level 1 alteration. Section 602.4 in the
Existing Building Code requires the new equipment to comply
with “materials and methods requirements” of the FBC-
Mechanical and FBC- Energy Conservation codes. Section
601.2 in the Existing Building Code will not let you alter
the system to make it less energy efficient.
Comment: If you are replacing the equipment and
reconfiguring or replacing duct system it changes the
work to a level 2. The requirements change and the answer
becomes yes.
