  • Code Version: 2007
  • Code: RESIDENT
  • Code Description: Residential
  • Chapter: 7
  • Section: R702.3.5
  • Topic: Gypsum Board

  • Question: Is it the intent of table R702.3.5, footnote D to refer to regular gypsum board with a joint compound-based texture material, i.e., knock down, stippled, etc. only or would it also require blue board, (commonly referred to as plaster board) with gypsum veneer plaster, (hard cote)to be of a minimum 5/8 thickness when installed on 24 inches on center framing?

Answer on 04/27/2012 at 4:43 PM

Footnote D requires either 5/8 or 1/2 inch sag resistant
board to be used in the specified circumstances. It does
not require Blue board

Commentary:

This requirement applies if using a water-based textured finish on a ceiling where the min thickness of the drywall for framing members 16" on-centers is 1/2" and the min thickness of the drywall for framing members 24" on-centers is 5/8" or 1/2" sag-resistant gypsum board.
