Original Request

  • Date: July 22, 2011
  • Requested By: Jonthan Peer
  • Requester E-Mail: jpeer@capecoral.net
  • Code Version: 2007
  • Code: ELECTRIC
  • Code Description: Electrical
  • Chapter: 2
  • Section: 210.52
  • Topic: Kitchen Islands / Peninsulas

  • Question: Is it the intent of NEC section 210.52 to view kitchen islands and peninsulas that seperate kitchens from living areas as both countertops and fixed room dividers?

Answer on 07/22/2011 at 10:27 AM

Yes. If the divider is over 12 feet, you would start from
the edge and install a receptacle, within 6 ft of the edge.
If there is still counter wall space after measuring 12 ft
from that receptacle then you would install another and so
on, otherwise the requirement would be for the one, because
the space is 2 ft. or larger.

Commentary:

The wall space adjoining / facing the living space must have receptacle outlets installed per 210.52(A), & the countertop side facing the kitchen must have receptacles installed per 210.52(C).
