Original Request

  • Date: April 07, 2009
  • Requested By: Gregg Zielinski
  • Requester E-Mail: gzielinski@asdnet.com
  • Code Version: 2004
  • Code: BUILDING
  • Code Description: Building
  • Chapter: 10
  • Section: 1016
  • Topic: Fire resistance rating of exit walls

  • Question: Is it the intent of Table 1016.1 to say that in a Business occupancy, on a multi tenant floor in a fully sprinklered building, that the multi tenant exit access corridor walls can have a fire resistance rating of 0 hours?

Answer on 04/07/2009 at 6:12 PM

It would depend on whether the corridor walls form part of
the tenant separation. There are two requirements here: 1.
Rated corridor due to serving as exit access and serving
the specified occupant load. 2. Tenant separation. If
there are separate tenants across the corridor, at least
one side of the corridor walls would require rating to
complete the tenant separation.

Commentary:

The corridor does NOT need to be a rated corridor per Table 1016.1, however, if there are separate tenants across the corridor, at least one of the corridor walls would be required to be constructed as a tenant separation wall and it must be rated accordingly.
