  • Date: September 08, 2008
  • Requested By: Eric Turcotte
  • Requester E-Mail: eturcotte@centria.com
  • Code Version: 2004
  • Code: BUILDING
  • Code Description: Building
  • Chapter: 17
  • Section: 1714.5.3.3.1
  • Topic: Testing to AAMA 501

  • Question: Is it the intent of 1714.5.3.3.1 to require all glazed curtain walls, window walls, and storefront systems to be tested per AAMA 501, or does this requirement apply only to doors that are part of such systems? If AAMA 501 is required, what would be the specified test pressure?

Answer on 09/08/2008 at 8:45 AM

Yes. All curtain wall and storefront systems are required
to comply with the AAMA 501 standard as well as FBC
2411.3.2.1.1, if located in the HVHZ. The test pressure
would be as required per the standard.

Commentary:

Additionally, the 2004 Florida Building Code states in Section 1714.5.3.3.1 "Glazed curtain wall, window wall and storefront systems shall be tested in accordance with the requirements of this section and the Laboratory Test requirements of the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) Standard 501;" Please note AAMA 501 lists water test requirements in section 2.10 and structural test requirements in section 2.11
