  • Question: Is it the intent of the FBC section 1009.11.1 to allow as an exception, handrails to form part of a guardrail at 42" high for an exterior staircase of an R2 (condo) upper level.

Yes, you can have the 42� handrail / guardrail if ALL the
requirements of the exception are met. Example: If the
stairs are not required to be accessible, because there
are elevators or ramps providing vertical accessibility to
the level(s)

Commentary:

This is not a reference or interpretation of Chapter 11 of the Florida Building Code. The question and response reference Chapter 10 and infer interpretation of only Chapter 10.
