Original Request

  • Date: June 13, 2007
  • Requested By: ROBERT E MOSS
  • Requester E-Mail: RMOSS@ALLIANCEDESIGNGROUP.COM
  • Code Version: 2004
  • Code: PLUMBING
  • Code Description: Plumbing
  • Chapter: 9
  • Section: 909
  • Topic:

  • Question: The section states that the "horizontal branch
drain" to a bathroom group is a wet vent when
sized according to Table 909.3. If a drain line
to a fixture that empties into the "horizontal
branch drain" is also sized according to Table
909.3, is it also a wet vent? This would imply
that the drain line to the fixture would serve as
the vent to the fixture and not have to be
withing venting distance, per Tabale 906.1, to
    the "horizontal branch drain".

No

Commentary:

Section 909.1 does not say that the "horizontal branch drain" to a bathroom group is a wet vent when sized according to Table 909.3. Section 909.1 states, "The wet vent ... shall extend from the connection of the dry vent (usually the top of the lav connection tee) along the direction of flow in the drain pipe to the most downstream fixture drain connection to the horizontal branch drain." Table 909.3 is used for sizing only when the design meets the definition above. A wet vent must be sized per Table 909.3. Only bathroom group fixtures as defined in Chapter 2 are permitted to connect to the wet vent and they are also permitted to be individually or common vented. The trap to vent distance for common vented or individual vented fixtures would be from the trap to the common or individual vent, not to the wet vent. There is no limit to how far a common or individual vent is located from the wet vent to which it connects and it is not required to size the line to an individual or common vented fixture per Table 909.3
