Question
If an elevator shaft enclosure penetrates the roof of a building and extends 5' above the building, does the roof of that enclosure need to be rated if the building is a Type VB building 3 stories maximum in height <35' high. Occupancy is Group H

The Code provides information and options as stated in 713.12,
The top of shaft enclosures shall comply with one of the following:
1.Extend to the underside of the roof sheathing, deck or slab and the roof assembly shall comply with the requirements for the type of construction as specified in Table 601.
The table provides for a fire resistance rating option of -0- in a Type V building.
Option 3 allows for the extension past the assembly and must comply with 1510. No rating is required unless required elsewhere by the Code, which does not appear to be the case for this building type and condition.
Remember, depending on the location of the penthouse the fire separation rating from table 705.5 may apply.
