  • Code Version: 2017
  • Code: RESIDENT
  • Code Description:
  • Chapter: Chapter 15 Exhaust Systems
  • Section: M1503.1
  • Topic: Range Hood Exhaust Duct

  • Question: Is it the intent of M1503.1, when stated to have a "smooth interior surface", that screws shall not be used for mechanically fastening ducts?

Answer:

Kitchen exhaust hoods in residential applications are not considered grease ducts. Therefore, screws are permitted to be used. Clothes dryers ducts are not allowed to have screws because of potential for lint buildup. The intent of the smooth interior surface is regarding the type of duct being used not the attachments or protrusions within it.

Commentary:

None.
