Interpretation #8408

The intent of this section is to ensure the Emergency Safety Disconnect (ESD) is located in a visible area from the pumps and within a short enough travel distance so as to be accessible quickly if needed. This section does not allow violating other sections of the code, such as the classified area requirements. Discussion should occur between the designer, owner, contractor and AHJ to ensure the location fits the need and if there are other requirements, such as seal offs due to classified area location, these requirements are met. As with many areas within code, we have general requirements and specific requirements. Safety and functionality mandates we look at all aspects of the requirements, apply the strictest and be sure we are all on the page with understanding the reasons why. In this situation, do not forget to include Fire in the discussions.
