Question
Table 1006.3.2(1) states a single exit or access to a single access for occupancy R-2 is permissible for basements, and levels 1, 2 and 3 providing occupancy, number of units and max common travel distances conform to the table. The question is if the building is 5 stories tall, with all units on level 4 and 5 having access to 2 exits, can units on 2 and 3 still only have access to a single exit providing the conform to table 1006.3.2(1).

Yes and no. Yes, if a 3 story bldg with only 4 units each floor, sprinklered and meeting egress distance may be allowed a single exit. However, the NO is based on the issue that the units above on the 4th & 5th floors are required two and that those need to be maintained all the way to the exit access.
Commentary
A building if designed correctly may meet all of the above.
Be aware, Note a. to table 1006.3.2(1) requires a fire sprinkler system and emergency and escape rescue openings in these units. "Buildings classified as Group R-2 equipped throughout with an automatic sprinkler system in accordance with Section 903.3.1.1 and provided with emergency escape and rescue openings in accordance with Section 1030."
