Interpretation #8039

Original Request

  • Date: December 12, 2017
  • Requested By: William R Mac Donald, Technical Director - Celcore Incorporated
  • Requester E-Mail: wmacdonald@celcoreinc.com
  • Code Version: 2010
  • Code: TESTPROT
  • Code Description:
  • Chapter: APPEND
  • Section: Appendix D
  • Topic: TESTING APPLICATION STANDARD (TAS) 114-95 APPENDIX D TEST PROCEDURE FOR SIMULATED UPLIFT PRESSURE RESISTANCE OF ADHERED ROOFING ASSEMBLIES

  • Question: In situations where test procedure(s) Appendix B, C or J would be an applicable means for conducting an uplift pressure test upon a roof construction, would it be the intent of the FBC to require their use in-lieu of Appendix D.?

    TAS 114, APPENDIX D states:
    Scope 1.
1.1 In situations where the uplift pressure test procedure described in Appendix B, C or J is not applicable, especially for liquid/spray applied roof constructions, the following test procedure may be used as an alternate method for evaluation of uplift resistance of the roof construction.

Yes, however in the case of qualifying fully adhered roofing systems to lightweight insulating concrete, two structural substrates are typically used: structural concrete or steel deck with joists. Since the FBC allows the structural elements of a building to be designed (i.e. ACI, SDI, and SJI), use of TAS114 Appendix D to qualify the design pressure rating of a fully adhered membrane to the insulating concrete is allowed.
