Question
Is it the intent of 1102.2 to not allow an addition to a building that per FBC 5th edition (2014) exceeds the area for that type of use even when a fire barrier is used to separate fire areas per table 707.3.10

The code is clear on this issue. See the following - 1102.2 Area limitations. No addition shall increase the area of an existing building beyond that permitted under the applicable provisions of Chapter 5 of the Florida Building Code,
Commentary
The addition would need to be a new building with fire separation, fire wall, as required by the Florida Building Code, Building. Use of the properly rated and designed fire wall would create a new building which would be required to comply with the current requirements.
