Question
If remodeling a home in the wind borne debris region that was built to the Florida Building Code at the time it was built and a renovation is to the Florida Building Code, how does the exception to opening protection apply? Frankly the exception is rather confusing as it applies to single family residential structures yet single family residential structures are referenced in the code.

Sorry for the confusion. The administrative chapter, Chapter 1, applies to all volumes of the FBC. Chapter 1 requires repairs, alterations, additions, and changes of occupancy to comply with Chapter 34 of the FBC-Building. Chapter 34 requires compliance with the FBC-Existing Building. If more than 25% of the aggregate glazing is replaced in a 12 month period, the openings must be protected. In all cases, the replacements must meet the design loads of the code.
