Code allows for alternatives. You need to continue reading through all of 1008.1.2. Exception 6 allows for horizontal sliding doors. These doors must then meet the requirements found in Section 1008.1.4.3. It also allows in exception 7 power operated doors meeting the requirements of Section 1008.1.4.2.
As a side note, make sure that any specific requirements found in Sections 407 and 449 are also met.
