Question
Is it the intent of 307.2.3 (4), which was reserved in 2010, to no longer require secondary drain pans?

Yes. Method 1 uses the auxiliary drain pan as one of 4
secondary protection methods. Method 4 eliminates the need
for the auxiliary drain pan by installing the water level
detection device in the primary drain line, the overflow
drain line, or in the equipment-supplied drain pan. Method 2
also allows installation without the auxiliary pan by
installing the overflow drain line at a higher level than
the primary drain connection and discharging at a conspicuous
point to alert the occupants.
Any of the methods addressed are acceptable as the purpose
is to ensure condensate can be safely disposed of, alerting
the occupants to potential problems and/or shutting down the
unit in the event of a primary failure top prevent damage.
