Is it the intent of 602.2 to allow the installation of materials which are similar in appearance, but are of different composition, for siding replacement and do those repairs only have to comply with the applicable code at the time that the building was originally erected?

Yes, 602.2 allows like material for alteration or repair,
this would apply to siding, the material would have to be
installed per its product approval and current code.

Commentary
Firstly, the reference to Section 606.2.1 in the "Comment"
is irrelevant unless the siding is a structural element.
Secondly, like materials is not defined and is not exactly
the same as the material being replaced, the local official
would be the one to determine if it is acceptable as a like
material.
