No. The mechanical code does not include
brick or clay ducts as an option for
metal ducts.

Commentary
While FMC 506.3.1.1 is specific as to what materials may be
used to serve a Type I hood, brick or clay are not
included. It is possible the answer could be yes. The code
intent is to require a Type I Hood. The code is specific
that Type I hoods are to be of steel and does not provide
any alternate, although a building official could accept an
alternate shown to be the equivalent or better, such as
brick or clay, with proper documentation, although the
porous nature of clay or brick could present a problem in
establishing equivalency.
