What is the intent of "The walking surface of each element in the means of egress shall be uniformly slip resistant along the natural path of travel"?

It is a general statement with the intent of preventing
slippery surfaces. While not adopted by the building or fire
prevention code, ASTM F 1637 Standard Practice for Safe
Walking Surfaces will provide some guidance for decision making.
