Question
Is it the intent of section 1507.2.9.3 to require a 4-inch width of roof cement for any and all drip edge installed over underlayment in lieu of installing such drip edge beneath underlayment?
Answer Published 10/24/2012 at 9:06 AM
No. If it is elected to install the
drip edge metal over the underlayment
at an eave, the code section(s) require
a minimum four inch width of roof
cement installed over the drip edge
metal (This requirement is a Florida
Specific Amendment to the base code).
Ostensibly, to provide an enhanced sealing of the roof
shingles and improved wind resistance at a
vulnerable location on the roof. In the
event the drip edge metal is installed
at the eave under the underlayment the
minimum four inch width of roof cement
is not required. This eave
configuration, while perhaps not as
wind resistant, does allow for improved
drainage of any water which may be
blown under the shingles.

Commentary
The code section(s) do not provide specific
instructions regarding the treatment at
the gables (rakes). In this case the
product approval or manufacturers
instructions will provide necessary
guidance.
