Question
Is it the intent of the above referenced Code and Section to allow for providing a new automatic fire sprinkler system only in the tenant space requiring a Change of Occupancy (versus the entire building)?

Section 912.2.1 states that
the "system shall be provided
throughout the area where the change of
occupancy occurs." This would limit the
installation of the system to only the
area where the change of occupancy has
occurred. If other portions of the
building have not had a change of
occupancy, then those portions would
not require retrofit with a fire
sprinkler system. This applies to separated mixed occupancy.
If it will be non-separated mixed occupancy, the entire
building is required to be sprinklered.
