Question
Is it the intent of Table 503.2.3(7) to specify which path, A or B to choose for minimum chiller efficiency?
Answer Published 04/26/2012 at 10:04 AM
Based on research, Path A and Path B are determined by the
designer based on the operation of the Chiller. If the
chiller design is intended for the unit to operate at near
full loads most of the time, then Path A sets the standard
for minimum energy efficiency. However, if the chiller is
designed for maximum loads, but the structure will only see
maximum loads for short periods of time, thus meaning the
chiller will operate at lower capacities most of the time,
then Path B efficiencies are required.

Commentary
Most design paths in Florida would probably be Path B,
unless the chiller is serving a specific processing load in
industrial or even University research centers. It would be
appropriate to ask the designer to justify compliance with
Path A.
