Question
Is it the intent of exception to eliminate the need for a supply air duct smoke detector at the air handler if the building if totally equiped with smoke sensors per NFPA 90A.

If the area served by the system requiring the smoke
detector is equipped with an area smoke detection
system in compliance with the FFPC, then there is no need
for a smoke detector to be installed in the duct system.
However, the area smoke detection system must be
interlocked to shutdown the air distribution system
upon detection of smoke in the area served by the air
distribution system.

Commentary
The area smoke detection system must also activate the
audible and visual alarms required by 606.4.1.
