Question
Is it the intent of section 603.1 to allow alterations to a A-2 occupancy with out having to install a new fire sprinkler system?

Yes, if the scope of the work is limited to an Alteration
Level 1, 603.1 would just require that the existing
conditions be maintained.

Commentary
The use would still have to comply with the provisions of
the Florida Fire Prevention Code NFPA 101 Existing
Assembly occupancy provisions.
