Question

Is it the intent of Section 310.1 to require that galvanized fuel gas pipe, that is connected to a water heater by way of a flexible connection, to be bonded? The circuit to the water heater is grounded. Is the gas piping required to be provided with a separate ground wire back to a grounded circuit? Can the ground wire be to a grounding rod?

Yes. The method for performing the bond must be in
accordance with Section 250.104(B) of the 2008 NEC.

Commentary

Section 310 of the Fuel Gas Code and Section 250.104(B) of the NEC allow the equipment grounding conductor of the circuit supplying the appliance to serve as the bonding means. If CSST systems are utilized, then additional bonding beyond the code requirements may be required by the CSST manufacturer. Consult the CSST manufacturer's installation instructions for details.
