  • Section: 801.2
  • Topic: Protection

  • Question: Is it the intent of 2020 Florida Building Code, Plumbing Volume section 801.2 to require drip pans or some other secondary means of protection under any sanitary, grease or drain lines that run above food service prep areas?

Answer:

No. Please see the attached commentary

Commentary:

The plumbing code no longer prohibits sanitary, grease, or other plumbing lines from being installed directly above commercial kitchens or food prep areas. Secondary protection of such piping is not required by Section 801.2 or any other code section. This section applies to "Devices, appurtenances, appliances and apparatus intended to serve some special function..." not to sanitary or grease lines. Examples given are of systems that "discharge (condensate) to the drainage system". There may be some other requirement such as Health Department rules that could warrant this protection.
