  • Code: BUILDING
  • Code Description:
  • Chapter:
  • Section: 907.2.5
  • Topic: Group H Fire Alarm & Detection Requirements

  • Question: Does the second sentence regarding automatic smoke detection pertain only to Group H-5 occupancies or occupancies used for the manufacture of organic coatings (i.e. not Group H-4, H-3, H-2 or H-1 occupancies that do not manufacture organic coatings)?

Answer:

The code requires automatic smoke detection shall be provided for any Group H occupancy for highly toxic gases, organic peroxides and oxidizers. Please see the attached commentary for additional information.

Commentary:

The question asks if this requirement applies to H-5 or occupancies used for the manufacture of organic coatings. If an H-1, H-2, H-3, or H-4 is manufacturing organic coating, then an automatic smoke detection system is required, An H1 through H-4 not manufacturing organic coatings would not be required to have a smoke detection system by the terms of Section 907.2.5.
