  • Code Version: 2021
  • Code: RESIDENT
  • Code Description:
  • Chapter:
  • Section: R606.3.5.3
  • Topic: Solid poured fill cells

  • Question: Is it the intent of this code section to mean that a solidly poured fill cell is to contain only the grout and steel reinforcement (rebar), and as such, does not allow for other material such as pvc piping, such as a plumbing vent pipe, to occupy the same space within this re-enforced cell?

Answer:

Using TABLE R606.3.5.1, a grout space using fine aggregate grout and 12 foot or less in height of the vertical cell pour, the minimum size for grouting is 2.5 X 3 inches. If the pipe or conduit in that cell chamber allows for that dimension of grout, it is acceptable by code. If not, that is not a code-compliant grout-filled masonry cell. Other dimensions apply for other grouting conditions within TABLE R606.3.5.1.

In addition, section R606.3 requires full embedment of the reinforcement with a minimum of 3/4-inch cover. Where the wall is exposed to weather or soil, the minimum cover is 2-inches.

Another consideration is the structural design. The designer should be consulted if this installation is not specifically identified on the plans as the designer has looked at the loads and engineering moments for gravity, wind and other factors. If this column is required to carry those loads and is designed as a full size item for that purpose, the structural design of the building may be negatively impacted by not having this structural column in place where it is required by the design and calculations.
