  • Code: BUILDING
  • Code Description:
  • Chapter:
  • Section: 2406.4.2
  • Topic: Protection of glazing

  • Question: Is it the intent of Exception 2 to allow the use of fixtures such as a countertop that is 26" wide by 36" high as a permanent barrier in order to forego the requirement for safety glazing where glazing in an individual operable panel adjacent to a door where the nearest vertical edge of the glazing is within a 24-inch arc of either vertical edge of the door in a closed position and where the bottom exposed edge of the glazing is less than 60 inches above the walking surface?

Answer:

The intent was to not have glazing in an area that a human could contact while operating the door. Exception 2 allows for a permanent barrier to fulfill the requirement to distance the human from the glazing. A base cabinet most likely does not meet the barrier requirement.
