  • Question: Is it the intent of C403.2.1 of the Energy Code 5th Edition to require a Manual N on an existing building A/C changeout?

Answer:

No, Manual N is one of the methods permitted. Additions,
alterations and repairs to existing buildings are required
to comply with Sections C402, C403, C404, and C405; or
ASHRAE 90.1.

Commentary:

The calculation of design loads is required and identified as Mandatory provisions. The ACCA Manual N is one of the methods provided by the code. . Design loads are required to be determined either per ASHRAE/ACCA Standard 183 or ACCA Manual N. (S.C403.2.1) In addition, there is an Exception for mechanical systems designed by a registered engineer.
