Original Request

  • Request ID: 8827
  • Requested By: Jordan Poppa
  • Requester E-Mail: jordan@poppaconstruction.com
  • Code Version: 2021
  • Code: PLUMBING
  • Code Description:
  • Chapter:
  • Section: 801.2
  • Topic: Protection
  • Question: Is it the intent of 2020 Florida Building Code, Plumbing Volume section 801.2 to require drip pans or some other secondary means of protection under any sanitary, grease or drain lines that run above food service prep areas?
  • Comment: Local officials are requiring drain pans be installed above the drop ceiling on the first floor and then plumbed to a drain beneath the drain lines above that drop ceiling that serve a 2nd floor bar area above. The lines are run above a commercial restaurant kitchen area including the cook line and food prep areas. This would be to catch any leaks that occur if pipe joints fail. Is it required to provide pans or move the drain lines so they do not run above food prep areas.

Existing Interpretations and/or Declaratory Statements Related to this request

Input Received:

No. This section applies to "Devices, appurtenances, appliances and apparatus intended to serve some special function..." not to sanitary or grease lines. Examples given are of systems that "discharge (condensate) to the drainage system". There's nothing in this section that would require secondary protection as mentioned in the request. There may be some other requirement such as Health Department rules that could warrant this protection.
No. The plumbing code no longer prohibits sanitary, grease, or other plumbing lines from being installed directly above commercial kitchens or food prep areas. Secondary protection of such piping is not required by Section 801.2 or any other code section.
