  • Requested By: charles futch
  • Requester E-Mail: CHARLES.FUTCH@CARASTRO.COM
  • Code Version: 2017
  • Code: PLUMBING
  • Code Description:
  • Chapter: Chapter 7 Sanitary Drainage
  • Section: 704.2 Change in Size
  • Topic: Reduction in size of the drainage piping
  • Question: Is it the intent of Section 704.2 to disallow the reduction in size of the waste piping at the connections to a lint and/or grease interceptor whose connection size is smaller than the waste line size connecting to the unit?
  • Comment: Grease interceptors sizing is based on the flow rate through the unit for proper operation and not by pipe size. Often the connection sizes to these units may be smaller that the waste line connecting to the unit. Quoting 704.3, an interceptor installation was recently turned down because the connection size of the interceptor was smaller than the pipe connecting to it. Is the interceptor to be over- sized in order to have a pipe connection size the same as the pipe entering the interceptor?

Input Received:

Section 704.2 prohibits any reduction in pipe size in the direction of flow, except for water closet bend fittings and water closet flanges. There is no such exception given for grease interceptor connections. Although grease interceptors are equipped with flow control devices that essentially restrict the flow entering the interceptor, this does not relieve the installer of the responsibility of complying with 704.2.
