  • Chapter:
  • Section: 2406.4.2
  • Topic: Protection of glazing
  • Question: Is it the intent of Exception 2 to allow the use of fixtures such as a countertop that is 26" wide by 36" high as a permanent barrier in order to forego the requirement for safety glazing where glazing in an individual operable panel adjacent to a door where the nearest vertical edge of the glazing is within a 24-inch arc of either vertical edge of the door in a closed position and where the bottom exposed edge of the glazing is less than 60 inches above the walking surface?

Input Received:

It is my opinion that the barrier needs to be completely between the door and the glass and not partly under the glass as it appears to be from the example given
I believe the intent was to not have glazing in an area that a human could contact while operating the door. I believe that exception 2 allows for a permanent barrier to fulfill the requirement to distance the human from the glazing. A base cabinet of the size mentioned would fulfill that barrier requirement

Answer:

The intent was to not have glazing in an area that a human could contact while operating the door. Exception 2 allows for a permanent barrier to fulfill the requirement to distance the human from the glazing. A base cabinet most likely does not meet the barrier requirement.

Commentary:

None.

Comments on Draft:

I do not feel that a base cabinet does fulfill that requirement as the glass can be located above the cabinet, within reach of human contact and still a hazard, the permanent barrier would have to go high enough to actually separate the human from the possibility of glass contact.
I agree the counter may satisfy the requirement. However, as suggested by Michael, the height of the barrier must provide a barrier for any piece of nonsafety glazing within 60 inches of the floor.
agree with Joe and Michael.
Looked at Code commentary. They talk wall or other permanent barrier. Commentary states if not full height wall then you still have to consider any glazing within the 60" to require the safety glazing.
