Original Request

  • Request ID: 8525
  • Requested By: Derek Porter
  • Requester E-Mail: dporter@scgov.net
  • Code Version: 2021
  • Code: BUILDING
  • Code Description:
  • Chapter:
  • Section: 456.3.5
  • Topic: Public Food Service Establishments (Electrical Wiring)
  • Question: Is it the intent of FBC 456.3.5 to disallow electrical devices such as GFI receptacles in Public Food Service Bathrooms, and to allow "only a wall switch or approved pull cord?"
  • Comment: FBC 456.3.5 implies that no electrical devices are allowed in Public Food Service Establishment bathrooms, other than a light switch or pull cord. This appears to be based on NEC 210.70 requirement for a wall switch-controlled lighting outlet. Are bathrooms in Public Food Service Establishment Bathrooms allowed to have receptacles, provided they meet the GFI protection requirements of NEC 210.8?

I would request the answer be changes to:

Yes, It appears that is the case based on the wording contained in that section.

I would add the guidance to the comment section: Any other devices or wiring could be approved as an alternate material and method per section 104.11 FBC-B
I agree that the local building official has the authority to "approve" the installation of a Public Food Service bathroom receptacle under FBC 104.11. If no approval from the B.O., then no receptacle per FBC 456.3.5.
I don't think I agree as a restroom will have other electrical devices such as hand dryers, exhaust fans, sensors for flushing or water. The begining of 456.3.5 talks about preventing fire or injury but only as it relates to removing defective wiring and keeping all wiring in good condition. The next sentence " Only a wall switch or approved pull cord shall be permitted in bathrooms" I believe is only concerning the lighting. The next sentence says all electrical wiring to be in accordance with FBC Chapter 27
