Original Request

  • Request ID: 8523
  • Requested By: Donald Naylor
  • Requester E-Mail: Donald407@cfl.rr.com
  • Code Version: 2021
  • Code: MECHANIC
  • Code Description:
  • Chapter:
  • Section: 507.2.6
  • Topic: Clearance required
  • Question: Is it the intent of section 507.2.6, using the exception provided, that the wall assembly with the gypsum wallboard or cementitious wall board contains no combustible material outside of the 18" clearance specified?
  • Comment: I have a type 1 hood Mounted 80" above Finished floor against a 20Ga metal stud wall with 1/2" gypsum drywall (Both sides) and stainless steel paneling on the side against the hood. Inside the wall below 24" aff I have pvc conduit feeding the electrical devices for the cooking equipment. I also have a Plumbing stack inside the wall passing through the 18" clearance area which would need to be Cast Iron as it passes within 18". The way I read this section is the wall assembly may contain combustible materials as long as the 18" clearance from the hood system is maintained. I am being asked to remove all combustibles from the wall assembly, interpreting "Non combustible Structure" as the entire assembly of the structure (Wall in this case)

Input Received:

Unless materials listed and labeled to reduce such clearance. The 18 inch clearance from the hood to combustible materials include any and all components that may be part of the assembly of such wall, such as pvc piping in the wall.
To the question, Yes.

Answer:

Yes

Commentary:

Unless the materials are listed and labeled to reduce such clearance.

Comments on Draft:

I agree (Sorry, I thought I had responded to original)
Agree
Actually, let me pull this back. Wall assembly would be the wall framework and sheathing, not incidental materials. Based on reading the commentary, nothing is said about any conduit, just framing and substrate. I was too quick in my original feedback.
I agree with Linda's 2nd answer I think. They do not need to remove all items from the entire wall outside of the 18" area.
