  • Code Version: 2017
  • Code: BUILDING
  • Code Description:
  • Chapter: Chapter 30-Elevators and Conveying Systems
  • Section: 3005.2
  • Topic: Fire Command Centers and Elevator Control Rooms
  • Question: Per FBC 2017 Section 3005.2 – Is the Fire Command Center of a High-rise building considered an elevator control/machine room and as such is it required to be ventilated or air-conditioned?
  • Comment: We've run into a couple projects lately where the AHJ inspectors are requiring, at the last minute, for us to put HVAC equipment serving the fire commend center on emergency power. We believe that this is incorrect and that the fire command room is technically not even required to be conditioned, let alone be required to have conditioning on emergency power.

I think I answered this once but did not see a response from Linda on the answered one and do not see Pete's response on this one. I agree with the answer the ventilation for elevator control/machine rooms does not apply. The standard light and ventilation requirements do apply. The code does not require air conditioning.

Answer:

No, although normal light and ventilation requirements apply.

To the question, Yes. FMC 401.2 Any occupiable space must be ventilated.
I agree with the answer. Normal light and ventilation provisions apply (which I think is what Pete is getting at) but not elevator machine room ventilation, and the code does not require air conditioning.
