  • Code: Existing Building

  • Chapter:
  • Section: 706.1
  • Topic: Positive roof drainage
  • Question:
Is it the intent of the exception in section 706.1 to require a slope on flat roof during a re-roof to create positive drainage?
  • Comments:
It has been suggested that the definition of Positive Roof Drainage in Chapter 2 of the Florida Building Code supersedes the requirement of a slope if a flat roof drys within 48 hours of precipitation. I am of the opinion that the definition is clear that a slope is required, as the definition does not use the phrase drys within 48 hours. The definition of positive roof drainage in chapter 2 is "the drainage condition in which consideration has been made for all loading deflections of the roof deck, and additional slope has been provided to ensure drainage of the roof within 48 hours of precipitation."
